About కృష్ణ పాడ్యమి

The first tithi of a paksha, and therefore a threshold. In shukla paksha it is the day after the new moon, when the first sliver of the moon becomes visible; in krishna paksha it follows the full moon and begins the waning. Its deity is Agni, the fire that carries an offering from this world to the next, and its character is that of ignition — the moment something is set going.

The paksha

In krishna paksha the moon is waning, losing light each night. The waning half is treated as favourable to inward, reductive and concluding work — practice, fasting, ancestral rites and the settling of what is outstanding — rather than to new outward beginnings.

Nanda — joyful

Nanda means 'delight'. These tithis favour festivity, auspicious openings, art and anything undertaken in good spirits. They are ruled in the muhurta scheme by Friday, and work begun on a Nanda tithi that falls on a Friday is held to be doubly favoured.

What it traditionally favours

Beginnings, installing images and lamps, fire rituals, and the first day of an undertaking.

How this tithi is reckoned

Published panchangams name a day for the tithi running at sunrise. The date pages on this site currently read it at 06:00 local time in the city you have selected, which usually gives the same answer; the methodology page explains when it does not. Because a tithi can begin or end at any hour, the same calendar date can carry a different tithi in two cities several time zones apart — this is a real difference, not an error, and it is why every timing on this site is computed for a specific place rather than for a country.
