How to read today's panchangam

A panchangam is not a forecast. It is a description of where the sun and the moon actually are, expressed in the five limbs — pancha anga — that Indian timekeeping has used for two thousand years. Read from the top of this page, it answers a simple question: what kind of day is this, and when in it should I do the thing I mean to do?

Tithi — the moon's distance from the sun

A tithi is the time the moon takes to gain twelve degrees on the sun. Because the moon does not travel at a constant speed, a tithi is not a fixed number of hours: it can run anywhere from about nineteen to twenty-six. That is why a tithi rarely lines up with a calendar day, and why we print the moment it ends rather than pretending it fills the day. Fasts and vratams are anchored to the tithi running at a particular reference time — usually sunrise — not to the date on a wall calendar.

Nakshatra — where the moon is sitting

The zodiac is divided into twenty-seven nakshatras of thirteen degrees twenty minutes each. The nakshatra the moon occupies colours the day: some are considered soft and fixed and good for beginnings, others sharp and quick and better suited to travel or resolution. Your own janma nakshatra — the one the moon stood in when you were born — is the one your family will use for birthday rituals and for the first syllable of a child's name.

Vaara, yoga and karana

Vaara is simply the weekday, but it is the weekday that decides where rahu kalam, yamagandam and gulika kalam fall, because each is a fixed eighth of the daylight period assigned by weekday. Yoga is derived from the sun and moon added together, and karana is half a tithi. Together the five give a day its character without claiming to predict anything about it.

Rahu kalam and the auspicious windows

Rahu kalam, yamagandam and gulika kalam are each one-eighth of the time between sunrise and sunset, which is why they shift through the year and differ between cities — a Dubai sunrise and a Hyderabad sunrise are almost forty minutes apart. Abhijit muhurta is the roughly forty-eight minutes centred on solar noon, held to be good for nearly anything. None of these are prohibitions. They are a convention for scheduling, followed closely by some families and lightly by others, and we print them so you can follow yours.

Why the city matters

Every timing on this page is derived from sunrise and sunset at a specific latitude and longitude. Move a few hundred kilometres and sunrise moves with you; cross a time zone and the calendar day itself may change. We detect your time zone when the page loads and compute everything for the nearest city we cover, and you can set it exactly from the selector in the header. Your choice stays on your device.

We compute the panchangam astronomically and cross-reference it against the traditional printed panchangams in common use. How we compute
