Why the panchangam day starts at sunrise, not midnight
The convention behind every tithi you read, why "today" in a panchangam is not the same as today on your phone, and what it means for fasting, birth times and pre-dawn practice.
A midnight boundary is a modern convenience. It exists because mechanical clocks needed a fixed point and because a boundary in the middle of the night interrupts the fewest activities. It has no basis in anything observable: nothing happens at midnight.
Sunrise is different. It is a real event that anyone can see, that happens once a day, and that everyone in a place agrees on. The Hindu calendar begins its day there — suryodaya — and once you know that, several things that seemed inconsistent about panchangam dates become obvious.
The rule, and what it decides
The convention is stated simply: the day is named for the tithi running at sunrise. Whatever tithi is in force at the moment the sun's upper limb clears the horizon is the tithi of that day, regardless of what follows.
This is why a panchangam can show 'Dasami, ends 09:14'. Dasami was running at sunrise, so the day belongs to Dasami — even though Ekadasi occupies almost fifteen hours of it. The end time is not a contradiction of the heading; it is what makes the heading legible.
Why a rule was needed at all
Because a tithi is not a day long. It runs from about nineteen hours to about twenty-six, depending on how fast the moon is moving through its elliptical orbit. So three things can happen, and the calendar needs an answer for each.
- A tithi spans exactly one sunrise. The ordinary case: it names that day and nothing more needs deciding.
- A short tithi begins after one sunrise and ends before the next. It is kshaya — it names no day at all, and the calendar skips it. That is why a lunar fortnight sometimes has fourteen dates rather than fifteen.
- A long tithi spans two sunrises. It is adhika — it names both days, and the same tithi appears twice in a row.
Kshaya and adhika tithis are the mechanical reason two panchangams sometimes place a festival a day apart. When a tithi spans two sunrises, a further rule is needed to decide which of the two carries the observance, and different traditions apply different further rules. Ekadashi is the clearest case: the Vaishnava reckoning generally defers to the second day, the smarta reckoning often does not, and both are internally consistent.
Sunrise where, exactly
Sunrise is a local event, which means the panchangam day begins at different absolute moments in different places — and this is not a rounding detail. On the same date, sunrise in Hyderabad and sunrise in Dubai are about forty minutes apart. If a tithi ends in that forty-minute window, the two cities are genuinely on different tithis for that day. Not approximately: actually.
For readers outside India the effect is larger still. A visitor in New York reading an India-computed page at nine in the evening is reading a page for a day that, in India, ended hours ago. Every timing on this site is therefore computed for a specific latitude, longitude and time zone rather than for a country.
There is one further precision worth stating, because panchangams state it. Sunrise here means the moment the sun's upper limb appears on a level horizon, including the standard allowance for atmospheric refraction — a zenith distance of 90°50′, which combines about 34 arc-minutes of mean refraction with the sun's 16 arc-minute semi-diameter. Refraction is not a small correction: it lifts the sun into view roughly two minutes before it is geometrically above the horizon.
Where the rule shows up in practice
Fasting
An Ekadashi fast is kept for the tithi, not for the calendar date. It begins at sunrise on the day the panchangam names Ekadashi and is broken the following morning within the parana window — after sunrise, and before dwadashi ends. Both boundaries are sunrise-relative, and both are on the panchangam page.
Birth details
A child born at two in the morning is, by this convention, born on the previous panchangam day, with the previous day's tithi, nakshatra and vaara. This is why a birth time recorded from a hospital clock and a birth tithi recorded by a family purohit can appear to disagree by a day. Neither is wrong; they are using different day boundaries.
Pre-dawn practice
Brahma muhurta — the roughly forty-eight minutes ending about ninety-six minutes before sunrise — falls, by this reckoning, at the end of the previous panchangam day rather than the start of the new one. Practically nobody treats it that way in daily life, but it matters when the tithi changes overnight and a practice is tied to a specific tithi.
The kalams
Rahu kalam, yamagandam, gulika kalam and abhijit muhurta are all derived from the interval between sunrise and sunset. Change the sunrise and all four move. A national rahu kalam time is, for this reason, not a useful object.
One boundary, one habit
There is a practical payoff to the convention beyond its astronomical honesty. A calendar that begins at dawn puts its boundary where a household's day actually begins — the lamp lit, the bath taken, the first practice done — rather than in the middle of the night. That the panchangam and the daily routine share a starting point is not a coincidence; it is the reason a panchangam is read in the morning at all.
When does the Hindu day begin?
At sunrise in the place you are, not at midnight. The tithi running at sunrise is the tithi the whole day is named for.
Why does my panchangam say one tithi when a different one is running?
Because the day is named for the tithi at sunrise. If it ends at 09:14, the next tithi occupies the rest of the day but the day still carries the first one's name. The end time is printed for exactly this reason.
