Significance
Akshaya means undiminishing — that which does not run out. The tritiya of Vaishakha shukla paksha is held to be one of the handful of days in the year that carry their own auspiciousness entire, requiring no muhurta at all, and the specific claim attached to it is that whatever is begun or given on it does not diminish.
The tradition attaches a good deal to the day. Treta Yuga is said to have begun on it. Ganesha began writing the Mahabharata to Vyasa's dictation on it. The Ganga descended to earth on it. Krishna gave Draupadi the akshaya patra, the vessel that never emptied. Sudama came to Krishna with a handful of beaten rice and left with more than he could carry. Each of these is a story about something small that did not run out, which is the day's single idea told repeatedly.
In modern practice the day has been substantially reshaped by the gold trade, and it is worth being straightforward about that. Buying gold on Akshaya Tritiya is a genuine tradition, but its present scale is a recent commercial phenomenon rather than an ancient obligation. The classical emphasis is at least as much on danam — giving — as on acquiring, and the older texts are considerably more interested in what leaves the house on this day than in what enters it.
When it falls, and why
Akshaya Tritiya falls on the tritiya — the third tithi — of shukla paksha in Vaishakha, the second lunar month, which places it in late April or early May.
The rule is that tritiya should prevail during the madhyahna period. The day is considered strongest when it coincides with Rohini nakshatra or falls on a Monday or Wednesday, but unlike most festivals it does not require a favourable combination — the whole point of the day is that it is auspicious in itself, which is why it is one of the three and a half muhurtas of the year that Maharashtra counts as needing no calculation at all.
Pooja vidhanam, step by step
- 1
Bathe early and prepare
Bathe before sunrise and wear clean clothes. Clean the puja space and the threshold.
- 2
Worship Vishnu and Lakshmi
Offer tulasi to Vishnu — no offering to him is complete without it — and worship Lakshmi alongside. Recite the Vishnu Sahasranama or the Sri Suktam.
- 3
Offer barley or rice
Yava, barley, is the grain classically associated with the day. Where it is not available, new rice is offered in its place.
- 4
Give — this is the substance of the day
Danam is the older and larger half of the observance. Water, buttermilk, curd, fans, umbrellas, footwear and cloth are the traditional gifts, all of them chosen against the coming heat. Food and grain given on this day are held not to diminish.
- 5
Set up a water stall
The most characteristic act of the day in much of India: cool water, panakam or buttermilk offered to whoever passes. It is danam in its plainest form.
- 6
Begin what you have been waiting to begin
New ventures, new accounts, sowing, construction, a first lesson. The day carries its own muhurta, so nothing further needs checking.
- 7
If buying gold, buy in the morning
Where the household keeps the custom, the purchase is traditionally made before madhyahna. It is one part of the day, not the whole of it.
Samagri checklist
What to gather beforehand. Where something is not available, offer what you have — the intention carries.
- Tulasi leaves
- Barley (yava) or new rice
- Images of Vishnu and Lakshmi
- Sandal paste, kumkum, turmeric, akshata
- Flowers — tulasi and lotus especially
- Panchamrita — milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar
- Water pots, buttermilk, or panakam for giving
- Fans, umbrellas, cloth or footwear, for danam
- Ghee lamp, wicks, camphor, incense
- Fruit, coconut, jaggery
The vrat katha
The story most often told is Sudama's. A poor brahmin and a childhood friend of Krishna, he was pressed by his wife to go to Dwaraka and ask for help. He could not bring himself to ask, and brought only a small twist of beaten rice as a gift, which he was ashamed to offer. Krishna took it from him and ate it, and Sudama went home having asked for nothing — to find his hut replaced and his family provided for.
The second is Draupadi's. In exile, with Durvasa and his disciples arriving to be fed and nothing left in the vessel, Krishna asked for the akshaya patra and ate the single grain of rice stuck to its rim. The sages, satisfied at a distance, departed.
Both stories turn on the same point, and it is not that a small gift is magically multiplied. It is that in each case the giver gave what they actually had, without calculation — Sudama his handful, Draupadi her last grain — and the day is named for what happened next.
How it differs by region
- In Maharashtra and Gujarat the day counts among the sade teen muhurat, the three and a half self-sufficient muhurtas of the year, and new ventures and account books commonly open on it.
- In Odisha it opens the ploughing season — Akhi Muthi Anukula — and the construction of the chariots for the Puri Rath Yatra begins on this day.
- In the Telugu states and the south it is kept with Lakshmi worship, danam and water stalls, with the gold purchase a more recent and more urban addition.
- In Rajasthan and parts of the north large numbers of weddings are held on the day, on the strength of it needing no muhurta.
- For Jains it is Akshaya Tritiya too, ending Rishabhadeva's year-long fast with sugarcane juice, and the varshitap fasts are broken on it.
