Significance
Guru Purnima is kept on the full moon of Ashadha for Veda Vyasa — who divided the single Veda into four, composed the Mahabharata and the Puranas, and is regarded as the first teacher in the lineage. It is also called Vyasa Purnima for that reason. The day honours not a particular guru but the transmission itself: the fact that this knowledge reached you because somebody took the trouble to hand it on.
The word guru is usually glossed as gu, darkness, and ru, that which removes it. What the tradition actually means by the role is narrower and harder than the modern usage suggests. A guru is not a motivational figure or a source of comfort; the classical descriptions are consistently of someone who tells you what you do not want to hear, at the moment you are least willing to hear it, and who is answerable for having done so.
The day also opens Chaturmasya. Traditionally, wandering ascetics stop moving for the four months of the rains and stay in one place, and the reason given is practical and rather beautiful: the monsoon brings out insects and new growth, and a wandering monk cannot avoid treading on life. So they settle, and because they settle they teach. Guru Purnima is where that begins, which is why it is a day of instruction rather than only of homage.
When it falls, and why
Guru Purnima falls on the purnima — the full moon — of Ashadha, the fourth lunar month, placing it in July. The full moon must prevail at the time of the worship, and where purnima spans two days the one carrying it in the morning is generally taken.
It coincides with the start of Chaturmasya, the four-month period from Devshayani Ekadashi in Ashadha to Prabodhini Ekadashi in Kartika during which weddings and housewarmings are traditionally suspended. Buddhists keep the same full moon as Asalha Puja, marking the Buddha's first sermon at Sarnath; Jains keep it as the day Mahavira took his first disciple. All three are honouring the same event under different names — the moment teaching began.
Pooja vidhanam, step by step
- 1
Bathe early and prepare
Bathe before sunrise and wear clean clothes. Clean the space where the worship will be done and set a low seat for the guru's image or padukas.
- 2
Vyasa puja
Worship Veda Vyasa, and through him the whole lineage. Where a household has no living guru, the worship is offered to Vyasa, to the Vedas, or to the family deity as the source of instruction.
- 3
Pada puja
Where a living guru is present, the feet are washed and honoured — pada puja — and the offering is made there. Where the guru is absent or has died, the padukas or a photograph stand in.
- 4
Offer guru dakshina
Dakshina is offered according to means. It is not payment: the tradition is explicit that instruction is not sold, and the offering acknowledges a debt that cannot be settled.
- 5
Recite the Guru Stotram
The Guru Gita, or at minimum the verse gurur brahma gurur vishnu, recited before the image. In many lineages the guru's own works are read instead.
- 6
Study
The day is for instruction, not only for homage. Many lineages begin a new course of study on it, and Chaturmasya discourses commonly start here.
- 7
Feed and give
Annadanam is standing practice — feeding students, ascetics and whoever comes. Books and study materials are also given.
Samagri checklist

- Fruit, coconut, betel leaves and nuts
- Ghee lamp, wicks, camphor, incense
- Guru dakshina, according to means

The vrat katha
Veda Vyasa — Krishna Dvaipayana — was born on an island in the Yamuna to the sage Parashara and Satyavati. He divided the Veda, which had been transmitted as a single body, into the four collections, so that it could be held and taught by more than the exceptional few. That act of division for the sake of transmission is why he is counted the first guru.
He then composed the Mahabharata, dictating it to Ganesha, who agreed to write on condition that Vyasa never paused; Vyasa agreed on condition that Ganesha never wrote what he had not understood, and composed knotted verses at intervals to buy himself time. The story is usually told as a joke about scribes, but it is also a fair description of what teaching is: the pace set by what the student can actually take in.
The verse recited on the day places the guru in the trinity itself — as Brahma who creates the student, Vishnu who sustains them, and Maheshvara who dissolves what stands in the way — and then says the guru is the parabrahman beyond all three. The claim is deliberately large, and it is made about the function rather than about the person.
How it differs by region
- Across the Telugu states and the south the day is kept as Vyasa Purnima with worship at mathas, and Chaturmasya discourses commonly begin on it.
- In Maharashtra it is closely associated with the Dattatreya and Nath lineages, and Shirdi draws very large numbers.
- In the north it is kept at ashrams and by every sampradaya, with pada puja and the offering of dakshina.
- Buddhists keep the same full moon as Asalha Puja or Dhamma Day, marking the first sermon at Sarnath and the beginning of the rains retreat.
- Jains keep it as Guru Purnima too, marking Mahavira taking Gautam Swami as his first disciple.
Common questions
Who is worshipped on Guru Purnima?
Veda Vyasa, and through him the whole line of transmission. Where there is a living guru, the worship is offered to them; where there is not, to Vyasa, to the Vedas, or to the family deity.
What if I do not have a guru?
The day is kept regardless. The worship is offered to Vyasa or to whatever has actually taught you — a text, a tradition, a parent. The tradition is not restrictive about this.
Why does Guru Purnima start Chaturmasya?
Because wandering ascetics stop moving for the four months of the rains, to avoid treading on the life the monsoon brings out. Having settled, they teach — so the retreat begins with a day of instruction.
What is guru dakshina?
An offering made according to means. It is explicitly not payment — the tradition holds that instruction is not sold, and dakshina acknowledges a debt rather than clearing one.
Is Guru Purnima observed outside Hinduism?
Yes. Buddhists keep the same full moon as Asalha Puja, marking the Buddha's first sermon; Jains mark Mahavira taking his first disciple. All three honour the moment teaching began.

గురుర్బ్రహ్మా గురుర్విష్ణుః గురుర్దేవో మహేశ్వరః ।గురుః సాక్షాత్ పరబ్రహ్మ తస్మై శ్రీగురవే నమః ॥
The guru is Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara; the guru is the very Supreme — to that revered guru, salutations.
