Griha Pravesh (housewarming) dates 2026

Entering a new home — fixed nakshatras, outside Chaturmasya.

Griha pravesh is the first formal entry into a house, and the muhurta logic behind it is the same as for a foundation: you want a day whose character is fixed rather than movable, because the act is meant to be permanent. The sthira nakshatras are therefore first choice, and the chara — movable — group is specifically avoided, since a house that 'moves' is not what anyone is asking for.

There are three recognised kinds. Apoorva is entry into a newly built house. Sapoorva is re-entry after a period away. Dwandwa is entry after repair or reconstruction. The muhurta requirements are strictest for the first.

As with weddings, Chaturmasya closes four months of the year. Thursday and Friday are the favoured weekdays; Tuesday and Saturday are generally avoided, as is amavasya and any rikta tithi.

Choosing within the day

Pick a date from the list, then place the ceremony itself in abhijit muhurta or another favourable window on that day, and keep it clear of rahu kalam. The first entry is traditionally made with the right foot, carrying a kalasham, and the milk is boiled over until it spills.

If the house is not yet fit to live in, tradition holds that griha pravesh should wait — the ceremony marks occupation, not completion of the paperwork.

Common questions

Which nakshatras are best for griha pravesh?

The sthira group — Rohini, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada — along with Mrigashira, Chitra, Anuradha, Shravana and Revati.

Can griha pravesh be done during Chaturmasya?

It is traditionally avoided across most of India. Where a move cannot wait, many families perform a simplified entry and hold the full ceremony after Prabodhini Ekadashi.

What time of day should the entry be made?

In a favourable window on the chosen day and clear of rahu kalam. Abhijit muhurta, centred on solar noon, is the usual choice when nothing better is available.
