Namakaranam (naming) dates 2026

Naming a child — usually the 11th or 12th day, with the syllable from the birth nakshatra.

Namakaranam is one of the sixteen samskaras, and its timing is fixed more by the child's age than by the calendar: the eleventh or twelfth day after birth is the classical prescription, with the sixteenth day, the first new moon, or the completion of the first year as accepted alternatives where the family cannot gather sooner.

The choice that actually matters here is not the date but the name. The syllable is given by the pada of the nakshatra the moon occupied at the moment of birth — each of the twenty-seven nakshatras has four quarters, and each quarter carries its own syllable. A child born in the first pada of Ashwini takes Chu; in the second, Che; and so on.

Our twenty-seven nakshatra pages carry the full syllable set for each, in pada order. If you know the birth nakshatra and pada, the syllable is there.

Choosing within the day

If the eleventh or twelfth day falls on a rikta tithi or an ugra nakshatra, most families move to the nearest suitable day rather than waiting for a perfect one — the age prescription outranks the muhurta here.

The rite itself is short: the name is spoken into the child's right ear, usually by the father, and then announced to those gathered.

Common questions

When should namakaranam be performed?

Classically on the eleventh or twelfth day after birth. The sixteenth day, the first new moon after, or the first birthday are accepted alternatives.

How is the name's first syllable chosen?

From the pada of the nakshatra the moon occupied at birth. Each nakshatra has four padas and each pada its own syllable — all twenty-seven are listed on our nakshatra pages.

What if the prescribed day is not auspicious?

Most families keep the day and simplify the ceremony, or move to the nearest suitable one. The age prescription is generally treated as the stronger rule.
