What Pournami is

Purnima is the fifteenth tithi of the waxing fortnight, when the moon is directly opposite the sun and fully lit. It is a purna tithi — one of completion — and the calendar loads it accordingly: Guru Purnima, Buddha Purnima, Sharad Purnima, Kartika Purnima and Holika Dahan all fall on a full moon, as does the monthly Satyanarayana vrat. In the purnimanta reckoning of the north, it is also the day the lunar month itself ends.

Who observes it

Kept broadly, and by many as a standing monthly fast regardless of which festival falls on it.

Fasting rules

A day fast broken after moonrise, or a single meal. Satyanarayana vrat is the most common form the day takes.

Pooja vidhanam

Worship of the deity of the month, offering of arghya to the moon after it rises, and charity — particularly of food, cloth and lamps. Sea and river bathing at dawn is kept where it is practicable.
