What Satyanarayana Puja is

The Satyanarayana vrat is the most commonly performed household puja in India, kept on Purnima and also at any moment a family wishes to mark — a new house, a wedding, a recovery, a promotion. It is deliberately undemanding: no elaborate qualification, no priest strictly required, and a katha of five chapters that everyone present listens to together. Its subject is simple and severe: a vow made must be kept.

Who observes it

Kept by households of every community and region. Frequently performed collectively in apartment blocks, offices and temples.

Fasting rules

A light fast through the day, broken with the prasadam after the puja. It is one of the gentler observances — the emphasis is on the katha and the gathering, not on abstention.

Pooja vidhanam

Set up a kalasham with a picture or image of Satyanarayana, banana leaves and stems. The five chapters of the Satyanarayana katha are read aloud in sequence. The prasadam is sapatha bhakshyam — a halwa of semolina, ghee, sugar and banana, offered and then shared with everyone present, which is not optional: refusing it is the failure the katha warns against.
