About Kumbha

Kumbha runs 300° to 330°, ruled by Saturn, and contains Shatabhisha entire — the most solitary nakshatra of the twenty-seven, associated with Varuna, with medicine, and with an empty circle as its symbol. Despite the water pot, Kumbha is classified an air sign; the pot is read as what carries rather than what is carried.

Where it appears in the panchangam

Maha Shivaratri falls while the sun crosses Kumbha. In Kumbha Mela years the Prayagraj gathering is timed by Jupiter's position taken together with the sun's entry into this rashi, and the festival takes its name from it.

Janma rashi

Your janma rashi is the rashi the moon occupied at the moment you were born — not the sun, which is what a western star sign uses. This is why the two frequently disagree, and why someone told they are a Leo in a newspaper may be a Karka by Indian reckoning. The janma rashi is what a family uses for naming, for annual rituals, and for matching in the traditional systems.
