About Amavasya
The fifteenth tithi completes the paksha, and it is the one place where the two halves diverge entirely. In shukla paksha it is Purnima, the full moon, sacred to Chandra and to the guru — a day of light, of vratas and of festivals. In krishna paksha it is Amavasya, the new moon, sacred to the ancestors and reserved for shraddha and tarpana.
The paksha
In krishna paksha the moon is waning, losing light each night. The waning half is treated as favourable to inward, reductive and concluding work — practice, fasting, ancestral rites and the settling of what is outstanding — rather than to new outward beginnings.
Purna — full
Purna means 'full' or 'complete'. These tithis favour the conclusion of things, ceremonies, journeys, and acts of charity and devotion. Their weekday is Thursday.
What it traditionally favours
Purnima: vratas, devotional festivals, satyanarayana puja, charity. Amavasya: ancestral rites, tarpana, quiet practice — not new beginnings.
How this tithi is reckoned
The tithi shown on any date page is the one running at sunrise in the city you have selected, which is the convention used by published panchangams. Because a tithi can begin or end at any hour, the same calendar date can carry a different tithi in two cities several time zones apart — this is a real difference, not an error, and it is why every timing on this site is computed for a specific place rather than for a country.
