About Shukla Ashtami
The eighth tithi belongs to Rudra, and it is the hardest-edged of the month: the moon is at half, the pull is at its most divided, and the tithi carries a corresponding intensity. Krishna Janmashtami falls on the krishna ashtami of Shravana, and Durgashtami and Kalashtami are both observed monthly on this tithi.
The paksha
In shukla paksha the moon is waxing, gaining light each night. The tradition treats the waxing half as favourable to growth, expansion and outward undertakings, and most auspicious ceremonies are placed in it.
Jaya — victorious
Jaya means 'victory'. These tithis favour anything competitive or confrontational — litigation, examinations, negotiations, and acts requiring nerve. Their weekday is Tuesday.
What it traditionally favours
Worship of Shiva and of Durga, mantra and tantra practice, martial and competitive matters. Avoided for weddings and journeys.
How this tithi is reckoned
The tithi shown on any date page is the one running at sunrise in the city you have selected, which is the convention used by published panchangams.
