What Masik Durgashtami is
The shukla ashtami of each month is kept as Durgashtami, a monthly echo of the Maha Ashtami that falls in Navratri. Ashtami is the tithi of Rudra and of the half moon, when the pull of sun and moon is at its most divided, and the Devi's worship is placed at exactly that point of tension.
Who observes it
Kept most widely in Bengal, Odisha and the eastern states, and observed across the south as part of monthly Devi upasana.
Fasting rules
A day fast broken in the evening after worship. Fruit, milk and sabudana are usual. Some keep only a single meal (ekabhukta) rather than a full fast.
Pooja vidhanam
Worship of Durga with red flowers, kumkum and a lit lamp. Recitation of the Durga Saptashati — at minimum the Argala and Kilaka stotras — or of the Devi Mahatmya. Kanya puja, honouring young girls as forms of the Devi, is kept by many on this tithi.
